LEATHER - THE MATERIAL
Leather is usually obtained by animals bred for food purposes ( cattle, sheep, swines, goats). The term “leather” refers to the raw material, everything that comes from its transformation is called “cuoio”. It can have different thickness and density depending on its kind, age, climate, diet and health of animal.
Leather is formed by two main coats: epidermis and derma.
Epidermis is the thinner and more superficial part, which during the process of tanning, is always removed (this process is not the same for fur dressing). Derma becomes “cuoio”. This is mostly make of collagen and it appears as a weaving of fibers. This weaving is closer to the external side (“fiore”)and less tight on the internal side (“carne”).
Derma is composed by two coats: one more superficial called “fiore” and one deeper called “crosta”.
One the main characteristic of leather is its ductility which represent the key of success in the world of fashion. Leather can be used for particular manufactures and can reach different thicknesses and finishings. Leather is also characterized by great resistance (against scraping off and wind)and cleanliness.
People say that leather “breaths” and it lets the steam given off by human body. Besides, its particular structure gives to leather thermal- insulation properties.
Attempts of imitation
For all these reasons, beyond the aesthetic aspect and the pleasant tactile sensation given by leather goods, there have been too many attempts in order to produce alternative materials imitating leather.
Such materials, even if similar to leather for visible point of view, never had the functional features given by the special and not imitable structure of genuine leather.
Leather means SENSORIALITY
When you touch a leather you recognize at once it’s an organic material.
It transmits heat contrary to the cold synthetic surfaces.
The “smell of cuoio” is one of the typical characteristic of leather.
The perception of a natural, refined and precious surface but also resistant, exclusive and permeable
Leather means CREATIVITY
With the modern tanning techniques we can obtain any shades of color with incredible depth effects.
Leather means TACTILITY
The unique porous structure, typical of leather, can be made with different levels of intensity, from the extremely compact and homogeneous surfaces (“abrasivati”) to the most structured ones(“bottalati”).
Leather means TRANSFORMABILITY
Leather can be as well one of the best work surface areas if we talk about prints, etchings and cuttings.
We can develop this way new graphic patterns and 3d effects.
Leather means WORKABILITY
Talking about finishing: from the extra shiny one to the super matt and nubuck.
Leather has ITS OWN LIFE
That means that it gets older but it does not get damaged.
With a normal use, changes and customization can happen in the course of time, and this prove the naturalness of the product.
Each kind of leather differs from the other. Its main characteristics depend on the species of the animal and on its life (as it happens for everybody)
This decide that its interpretation in terms of forms and design are enriched by the diversity and the character of the material employed: a real charm which is spread directly in the pro- duct and as well in the person who wears it.
The product changes depend on its use and show leather caractheristics at best.
If you choose a product realized with this material, it means that you have a product which is the expression of a real philosophy, of a real and unique lifestyle. Only one piece.
Leather is UNIQUE AND RECOGNAZIBLE
Porous surface which characterized the grain of leather that’s to say the external surface. This is of course one of the most recognizable features of leather.
Strong and typical smell of the products realized in leather.
The tactile approach to the material is essential to test texture, elasticity and surface finishings. Genuine leather can intensify this features.
By cutting the material you can see the woven fibers structure, a typical feature of leather. This effect can’t be reproduced with other materials.
Every single Cromia bag has in it a label with the caption “Genuine Leather”. Customers know this represents a real guarantee of genuine leather not including toxic or injurious materials, of particular features suitable to the production of the good where it’s possible to find this caption and of course of Italian leather.
The certification is a guarantee of value and quality.
Leather has its own life. It’s a natural item.
- There are different types of leather. Every kind differs from the other.
- Every single piece of leather is unique.
Unique, useful and precious features:
- Resistance to mechanic efforts
- Ability to adapt to different forms
- Ability to absorb sweat giving moisture back (We are talking about the well-know transpirable properties: leather transpires).
- Protection from high and low temperatures.
This is guaranteed by the empty spaces between fabrics.
